ABOUT US
There is a version of your life the world can see.
The titles. The achievements. The careful architecture of a career built with discipline and intelligence.
And then there is the other version, the one that surfaces at 10pm, over a glass worth drinking. The one that asks different questions. The one that hasn't finished thinking.
Scalpel & Quill was built for the space between those two versions.
Scalpel & Quill exists for people who have achieved what they set out to achieve — and still feel there must be more.
THE MOMENT
We didn't set out to start a winery.
Craig continues to practice as a surgeon, while Anita, who holds a doctorate in education, is retired from a career as a university professor. Together, they spent decades in professions built on precision, discipline, and lifelong learning. Wine was never part of a grand plan—it was simply a shared passion. Over the years, countless bottles were opened around dinner tables, during travels abroad, and in the company of family and friends. What began as an appreciation for wine gradually evolved into a fascination with the vineyards, the craft, the people behind the bottle, and the conversations that always seemed to follow the first pour.
Then came a bottle from Walla Walla — tasted with the same full attention they brought to everything else. What stopped them wasn't the flavor alone. It was the sense that someone's complete care and craft had gone into that glass, the way it goes into a procedure, or a text worth teaching.
Their winemaker asked a question they'd never considered: would you like to create something of your own?
They said yes before they'd thought it through. Which, it turns out, is how the best things begin.
ABOUT US
Why the Name?
The scalpel and the quill are not symbols of two people. They are symbols of one person: yours.
The scalpel is the part of you that operates, decides, and performs under pressure. The world built itself around this self. It rewards it, calls upon it, cannot imagine you without it.
The quill is the part of you that wonders, creates, and refuses to be entirely explained by your title. The part that reads past midnight and asks questions with no clean answers. The part the calendar rarely makes room for — but the part you'd most like others to know.
Most people spend their lives choosing between the two. Scalpel & Quill exists to say: you don't have to.
